How GulfBot helps

Ask GulfBot AI if you might need VAT registration, then send a request for accounting and tax support.

Worked example: crossing the threshold mid-year

A consultancy has monthly taxable sales of about AED 35,000. By the end of its eleventh month, its rolling 12-month total passes AED 375,000. It must apply within 30 days of that date. From the effective registration date, it must charge 5% VAT on standard-rated invoices and file returns. It can generally recover input VAT on business costs after registration, subject to rules.

Worked example: voluntary registration

A start-up with expenses of AED 200,000 in setup costs but few sales yet may choose voluntary registration to recover input VAT, if the expenses are taxable and the rules allow. This adds filing duties, so weigh the benefit against the compliance work.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Counting only invoices, not imports.
  • Forgetting to update invoice templates with TRN.
  • Missing return deadlines and paying late.
  • Mixing personal and business expenses.
  • Not keeping records for the required period.

VAT records you should keep

  • Tax invoices and credit notes issued and received.
  • Import and export documents.
  • Records of goods and services used for personal purposes.
  • A VAT account showing output and input tax.

Questions to ask an accountant

  • Which of my supplies are standard-rated, zero-rated or exempt?
  • Should I register voluntarily?
  • How will VAT interact with my corporate tax filings?
  • What software will produce compliant reports?

How VAT returns work after registration

Most businesses file quarterly. Each return reports output VAT (VAT you charged on sales) and input VAT (VAT you paid on business purchases). If output is higher, you pay the difference; if input is higher, you may carry it forward or request a refund under FTA rules. Returns and payments are due by the 28th day after the end of the tax period.

Tax invoice basics

A full tax invoice in the UAE generally includes the words "Tax Invoice", your name, address and TRN, the customer's details (and TRN if registered), a sequential invoice number, the date, a description of goods or services, the amount before VAT, the VAT rate and amount, and the total payable. Simplified invoices may be allowed in some cases. The free invoice generator can help you lay out a clean invoice.

E-invoicing is coming

The UAE has announced a phased e-invoicing system. Businesses should watch FTA and Ministry of Finance announcements so their accounting software is ready.
